Meek Mill is looking to buy property in Ghana.
What does this exactly mean for Americans as well as African Nations?
In 2019, Ghana launched and celebrated the Year of Return, aided by the Ghanaian government in encouraging African Americans, African descendants in the diaspora to settle and invest in the country.
As at December 2019, you remember very well that a lot of foreign names were seemingly in Nigeria or Ghana.
A few notable names;
- Cardi B
- Megan Thee Stallion
- Idris Elba
- Naomi Campbell
- Diggy Simmons
- Ludacris
- Rick Ross
- Koffee
- Conan O Brien
- Akon
- T.I
- Steve & Lori Harvey and many others.
The trope of African citizenship has also been a rising hot topic amongst the African diaspora as many are beginning to see the other side of African nations away from how they are televised and see it as a home away from home.
A safety net and a potential escape.
Most African nations are starting to fast track citizenship to people in the diaspora in order to make potential settlement as easy as possible.
An example of this is Ludacris.
Ludacris at the start of 2020, became a Gabonese citizen by marriage as his wife is from Gabon.
He celebrated his Gabonese citizenship on Instagram proudly showing his passport and also confirmed that his entire family including his mother and two daughters got citizenship as well.
Interesting.
We all know the process of naturalization in a foreign country and it is usually not so easy however I commend African nations and governments in the initiative to fast track foreign citizenship.
This is simply because the benefits are numerous for both parties; Foreign citizens most likely hold stronger currency so property would be cheaper to purchase and on the other end, there would be a massive boost to the economy without the dependence on loans from other world agencies.
It brings great joy to my heart to see true Pan-Africanism and I am excited for what the future of our people looks like with the assimilation of our brothers and sisters coming home finally.
The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart.” – Kwame Nkrumah, Africa Must Unite, 1963.
